I love how they’re able to keep their heads still when hovering. Ive had a bucket list shot of the wings blurred and head in focus since I began doing wildlife photography almost 10 years ago now! Yet to find a location and everything else to come into line for it. Great short Rich!
Thanks very much for watching, they really are amazing birds of prey and I especially love the American Kestrel here in Canada, although yet to see one here on Ottawa. Well I really hope you get that shot one day, and when you do don't forget to let me know as I'd love to see it. Thanks again R👍
I so really got into this one Richard, so much to see and talk about, stunning images, wow 👏
Ah thanks Raymond, yeah I like to talk a bit, lol... It's not to everyone's taste but I've got so much to say! Thanks for watching. R 👍
Don't forget the mink. Stake out a few muskrat dens and you might catch an interesting mink on musk interaction. Check the paraglider launch and the falls in Luskville for Peregrines...they fly with us regularly...well, maybe fly at us would be more accurate.
Ah nice tips, I'll make sure I remember that! I've seen a few Mink but yet to properly get an image of one, not seen in a good light in the UK to the damage they cause and not being a native specie but what a successful predator they are! Wow, I will check them out, I do love a Peregrine! Cheers Rich 😀
Hi Richard - noted your comment about mossies and bugs. Next time you are back, grab some Bovril... a small spoon before you venture iout will stop the mossies and gnats, midges etc... as they don't like it in the skin as you sweat. I'm back up to Mullion this month... looking forward to couple of early mornings up there - so really appreciate your sharing of location.... I now love it there... even though still 350 miles from home. We move to Cornwall next year... can't wait!
Thanks for the Tip Clive, they are very problematic here but I can live with it, my son and wife on the other hand, lol... No so! That's okay, it's my favourite place on the planet so far so I can relate to that, although people can work it out it's always good to keep locations to yourself as best as possible, I know you are responsible when it comes to that. Enjoy and have a great time, and goodluck on the move. Cheers Rich 👍
@@RichardBirchett Thanks Rich, yes, gotta keep our wildlife for the future generations to enjoy... enjoy your new move... exciting things ahead... look forward to seeing bears!
@CliveMear thanks Clive, all the very best to you 🙏👍
Always lush to see a bit of Cornwall-magnificent as always xx 🌅
Glad you enjoyed it Darling especially when you are away from home, we all miss home so it's great to be back. Safe journey back to us in Canada x👍
Great introduction to your new area in Ottawa Richard , looking forward to your future videos.
Hey Mark, thanks very much hopefully lots of fun times to come. Cheers Rich 👍
Thanks for the video, just spent two weeks in Banff, jasper and bc, really struggled to find birds on the trip for some reason. Presumably the mid thirties temperatures didn’t help but it was weird.
Hi there Alex, Blimey can't believe you didn't see a great deal of birds as that's such a amazing place to be. It could be something to do with the tail end of the breeding season, certainly birds at home in the UK tend to hide away after the stresses of a busy season and they always looked quite ragged and out of condition! I'd imagine heat is also a factor to consider. Thanks for watching Rich 👍
@RichardBirchett I know, 😂
Another great video Richard glad to see it also rains in Ottawa, 😅, loved the short clip from your location work, and looking forward to seeing some golden eagles, the last time I saw them was when I spent 3 months Alaska Kayaking around Prince William Sound and hiking and climbing in the Chugach Mountains, simply amazing birds. All the best and thanks for another great installment. 👍
Hey mate, thanks for stopping by to check out my latest, as I said in yours I enjoyed the Wet Hare day at home in the UK! Yeah, it's just nice to have a little mooch around my new patch to see what Wildlife is to be found. Sounds like that trip in your Kayak was an awesome experience, Goldies are certainly special birds which I've only seen in Scotland. Thanks again for watching, until next time. Cheers Rich 😀
Fantastic location. Congrats on the guide work. Stay well and safe travels. All the best. 👍📷😎
Thanks a lot Rob, can't wait to get out and see what Eastern side of Canada has to offer. Cheers Rich 👍
Fantastic video Richard. What a wonderful mixture of habits.. some really beautiful places there, I enjoyed you showing us round. Never heard of a Green Heron! Wish you luck with everything.. including Costa Rica.. and enjoy your new place!
Hey Paul, nice to hear from you and thanks for watching my move to Ottawa. Yeah there are some new birds to see and I loved seeing the Bald Eagles although from a great distance. Thanks for your wishes, now you've reminded me to leave a comment on your latest video, thought I'd put my pennies worth in, good conversational subject, touched on that in my Kestrel video whilst in the UK. Thanks again Rich 👍
welcome Richard to Canada hi live hat Hull close
Thanks very much Rene, that's real close only 5 km away! Thanks for watching Rich 👍
I love the Hobby too!
Thanks for watching Neil, such amazing birds and one I'd never tire of watching. R👍
Hi Richard, welcome to Ottawa. Lots of great opportunities for wildlife shots as you'll come to experience. If you head to Dunrobin area (west end) there are three Osprey nests that are very accessible - right by the side of the road. Also the Carp River conservation area - cormorants and herons. Look forward to seeing more of you local posts.
Thanks very much for watching my first video here in Ottawa, I'm so excited to be here and can't wait to get out and explore properly. Thanks also for giving me so great tips on locations it's massively appreciated, I do love an Osprey, I have seen two flying overhead since I've been here now, what a bird. Thanks again Rich 👍
Great to see around your area soooo much better than Toronto.Really looking forward to what’s to come. Enjoy your time there and I hope to get out to you in 2025.x👍🥰
Yeah, big time! Can't wait to show you around when you come over and visit next year! x
Awesome-looks like fun times ahead 😊
Lets hope so! Sure looking forward to it! R😀
Awesome, Rich! That looks like a great place to live as a wildlife photographer. I'm looking forward to seeing what you find! Costa Rica looks like a wonderful place!
Thanks Jon, yeah its a pretty grand spot to be located and only 20 mins from some pretty wild spaces! Yeah, I really hope we have a great time there, very exciting. Thanks again Jon😀
Welcome to Ottawa Richard! From just over the border in Hudson.
Thanks very much and Hi from my side 😃 and thanks for watching. Rich 😀
Welcome to Ottawa! There are lots of good birding areas around the Ottawa area.
Cool, thanks Patricia I can't wait to head out to explore further afield. Cheers R😀
This is a great video, and I look forward to following your Cn adventures. I, too, have moved to a new area in AB and Im just exploring my new patch. I love Costa Rica, had my 2nd visit this spring. Spotted 181 birds, 112 of them were Lifers. I look forward to your blog on that. 👍
Thanks Martin, glad you enjoyed it. Nice to start of local and then head out to search for new places! Wow, AB is a top spot and I am sure I'll get down there at some point in the next year. Can't wait for CR, the bird life looks incredible and the species! 181, 112 lifers! Wow thats good going.. Hopefully I will do one when I am there. Thanks again for watching R😀
Look forward to seeing all the species you discover in this new location. Best of luck!
Fingers crossed Mike, thanks R😀
Wow, looks like a beautiful location that you’ve moved to, so much nature up close. Perfect! Enjoy 😁 Look forward to seeing what you see as I haven’t been to Ottawa or Quebec. First night herons I saw were at central island in Tronno. Sry, I should’ve told you 😏 You saw a baby downy! I’m a bit jealous - I have a local downy pair, but I’ve yet to see a youngster. Oh and do you mean double-crested cormorants? 🤔🤭 Great introduction to your new patch. Hope you enjoy your time there. ~Dee Costa Rica is high on my bucket list. One day…
Hey Dee, its a nice spot for sure and I'm looking forward to just to get to explore my surroundings! So much to see and do, yeah those Night Herons are certainly on the list as our the others. Yeah, it was motionless and quite cute all tucked up there on that branch. Oh yeah, did I say Double Breasted, lol... Whoops! Thanks very much and CR is going to be fun I am sure of it. Thanks again R😀
Welcome to the area. Check out Mud Lake and Fletcher's Garden to begin with. Also, please be aware (if you're not already) about ticks. Mark's Workwearhouse has 'no fly zone' anti tick clothes. Don't go into the woods without being properly protected. Eastern Canada is endemic for deer ticks carrying Lyme disease (and unfortunately other diseases).
Thanks Brian, I've heard Mud lake is a good spot and it's not that far from me. Yeah, I've heard ticks are a bit of a nightmare here, I'll check that out and very handy to know. Don't want that sort of problem for us and the dogs! Cheers for that info. R👍
Hi Richard you have certainly moved to fantastic place it’s going to be amazing, so much wildlife on your doorstep really looking forward to seeing your next adventures, a brilliant video thank you for sharing it with us. Martyn
Many thanks Martin, fingers crossed it's an action packed time with some wonderful wildlife to see. R
How exciting to explore a new area! Can't wait to see more.
It really is so exciting, can't wait to show you how I get on. Cheers R😀
Looks like you are going to have loads of fun in your new area for sure
Cheers Gary, hope so plus all the wide open spaces 20 mins away! Bit different than before. R😀
2 mentions for me today! Great video-makes me miss home even more! Xx
Of course, big support to me on my photography so you deserve it! I bet it does, we miss you too! Home soon though! x😀
Amazing video Richard, exciting times ahead, good luck for future video's
Many thanks Darren, can't wait for my first Bear! lol.. R😀
Lovely video beautiful place Ottawa does that mean you’re back to England in 3 years 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi, thanks very much for checking it out. Yes, be back in the summer of 2027. Then I won't be going anywhere, looking forward to getting on with my Woodland Projects which I'll be going full speed on! Can't wait for that. Cheers R
Awesome mate. What a property you have there.. Looking forward to your future videos. Aspecially to see some eagles.
Thanks mate, yeah its a cracking house in an amazing location! Baldies were so cool, your little lady wouldn't like those bad boys! 😬
Welcome to Ottawa! I am sure that I will run into you in the field someday. By the way, the flycatcher shown at ~21'30"is an Eastern Phoebe. Thank you for the sharing!
Thanks very much indeed, I hope so, if we do please come and say Hi! Love meeting new people and talking all things Nature. Thanks for the info, I wasn't totally sure as they look alike, still learning the birds. My pleasure and thanks for watching. all the best Rich 😀
Top Drawer
Cheers Colin😀
Welcome/Bienvenue to Ottawa. Although still a big city, the wildlife definitely does frequent in and around it, especially where you're located. Lots of places to explore and you will happen upon our many mammal/bird species with ease. Overall, hope you enjoy the city and all that eastern Ontario has to offer. I've had many great experiences there, though never fully lived in it.
Thanks very much, yeah its a City but thankfully only 1 million opposed to Toronto with 7 million + in the GTA so I can already see the difference, I think it's the access to wilder spaces is so much closer which is better also. Looking forward to the Owls in Winter.. Thanks again R
Looks like an awesome place, mate! That layup looks very similar to a place nearby to me to where fallow deer lay. Looking forward to the next video 👍
Thanks mate, really lucky with the location! Yeah, deer depressions but there seemed so many all along every 5-6 feet! Thought there weren't that many about! Trail camera needed. Cheers R😀
Welcome to Ottawa Richard! You're off to a great start with this video.
Ah thanks very much Stephen, I hope to get amongst it and get out for some more very soon. Cheers Rich 😀
Awesome!!! You made a major move. So glad to see you and family are just loving life my friend. From North central Ohio. Cheers 🎉
Hey David, yeah it was a bit of a move from the UK, then to Toronto and now to Ottawa, the next one in 3 years back to the UK, lol... Its all good thanks, great to have you following from the USA. Cheers R😀
@@RichardBirchett so you're not moving permanently to Ottawa?
@@davidbarr9475 No, I could never leave Cornwall, UK. Home is where the heart is and this is just a Temporary move. R
Welcome to Ottawa, Rich!! I'm sure you are going to enjoy your time here. Certainly looks like you are off to a flying start! Rockcliffe is a really nice area to have a base. There are many great areas to shoot in, all around Ottawa, but all in good time. Cheers, Phil
Thanks Phil, yeah I really hope so and it feel much more me than Toronto. Yeah its a cracking spot here and feel very lucky, be out exploring very soon. Cheers R👍
Wow jealous!!!!! Ya can’t wait to see what you get from your amazing local patch unreal . Hope you get your permission to get in to conservation area that be brilliant. Fingers crossed for you there . Love the piece on trail cameras great clips at the end . Look forward to 2024-2025 with your photography adventures!! Top guy Richard 👍👍🎥
Thanks Craig, its a nice spot and its great to explore the doorstep but the wilderness does await my friend! A few videos on there but I'll keep at it and hope we get Fox or Coy soon, and maybe something different. Cheers my friend. 😀
Welcome to Ottawa!
Thanks very much indeed, people have been so friendly and welcoming! Amazing. Cheers Rich 😀
You'll be happy to know that the Pileated woodpecker isn't seasonal for us! They'll stay in the Ottawa/Quebec forests all year! Glad to see you're so close to the main river! We have so many bodies of water here... I keep kicking myself for not buying a polarising filter yet! I need a 95mm for my Sony lens, so I'll have to order it at some point this year... Rockcliffe is beautiful! Heck, you could basically just bike to Québec! Wakefield is also a beautiful family day trip in that area... Small village on a lake with an artsy bohemian vibe in the summer, surrounded by perfect forest The SAQ next to Casino du Lac-Leamy is your best wine source nearby 😂 That's about all I can think to share... all the museums near you are nice too.... at that air museum, you can book a scouting of Ottawa/Quebec from the air for the overview of the land
Hey Jon, Thats great to hear as I'd love to spend some time photographing them in the autumn and Winter, much easier to see! I've got a few Polarisers for my primes and screw threads for my other lenses so might come in handy! Yeah, Quebec is so close, one of my nearest Cinemas is in Quebec its that close, lol.. Cool info on the Wine! Me and my boy are heading to the Space and Air Museum today! It's a hot one! Cheers R👍
The high grass indentations at the beginning is more where the deer sleep! I see them plunked down often in the high grass! And you should see more wildlife around the Ottawa region than you did Toronto!
Hey Wayne, yeah I've seen that plenty of times at home but it striked me that there were so many along the track and after studying and reading about Coyotes hunting strategies it could be that also. But like you say they were large and very probable , would like to put a camera nearby but it's on a public path so I'd loath to do that for privicy issues and getting it pinched. I will have to do a night vision outing. Thanks very much for watching my friend. R👍
Awesome looking place, you’ve picked up some local knowledge very quickly. Good luck with your new projects.
Thanks mate, its a good start and those Baldys will keep me going for a while, so big and the cry it let out was awesome! Cheers R
Really great you are in ottawa now. The Algonquin (Annishnaabe) name of the river is the Kitchi Zibi which translates as Great River. The big island is Kettle Island. A bit further down the river are Upper Duck and Lower Duck Islands. Along with Petrie Island in Orleans these areas provide lits of habitat. And Pileated Woodpeckers along with the tiny Downie and medium sized Hairy Woodpeckers all stay around in winter. We will also have the odd Red Breasted Woodpecker and three towed Woodpecker in winter. Red headed Woodpecker and northern Flickers head south to escape the cold winters....so odd seeing 'home' in your video. Can't wait for the coming years and your discovery of these beautiful lands and waters.
Thanks Peter, you've been a massive support and friend since I arrived in Canada so to finally meet up will be awesome! I love all the local knowledge and names you translate, not sure I'll get the hang of the pronunciations but I'll sure give it a go! Yeah I can see Kettle island, I can't wait to get over there, is there public access? Great that the Pileated stays around all year, a woody I want to spend time photographing especially with the snowy backdrops! Red Breasted I've yet to see so that will be fun as I love Woodpeckers. I can't wait either, and great to be on your turf finally. See you soon I hope R😀👍
@RichardBirchett so even though I grew up in Gatineau I never went over to kettle Island. The only way to access it is by water. There is a boat launch over at parc sanscartier but if you are crossing with a canoe or kayak it would likely be just as easy to cross from the Ottawa side. Upper and lower duck island are also only water accessible, using the Blair road boat launch. And while a very cold winter could create thick enough ice to walk across, I wouldn't recommend it. There is a strong current in the river that w8ll likely keep the ice too thin in places for a safe crossing. And personally after going through ice in Labrador a few years ago while working, I stay off all river ice.
@@PeterLariviere Thanks for the info there Peter, sound advice and one which I shall take heed of. The boat one day might be on the cards, I'd like to find some Bald Eagle spots so if you can help offline that would be great. Nothing better than local knowledge. Cheers Rich
Fantastic video Rich. Encounters like that are just the best aren’t they! Something you’ll remember forever even without evidence to show for it.
Thanks very much for watching, yeah most of the time it’s about the experience over any image! Although it’s great to be able to nail a few shots that you are happy with from time to time. Cheers Rich👍
Hi Richard, great to see the hobby. I got the classic hobby with a dragonfly in flight at Rutland Water last summer. All the best Steve.
Thanks Steve, would have been nice for a couple of in flight shots but I'm just happy to have seen it! Yeah those catching dragonfly shots are special if you can get them, lol.. Well done mate! I've had a couple over the years. Cheers Rich 😀
Really superb great shots of the Hawks ands a fitting goodbye to Toronto 👍👍
Thanks Dad, I've loved finishing on a high with that last video, like you say a fitting tribute to a year in the big city. And those Hawks were pretty special and one's I won't forget in a hurry. M :-)
Enjoyed this very much what a great diverse lot of birds son a lucky day🦅🦅
@@nickbirchett3508 thanks dad, it was a great day and nice to get out on a new bit of ground. Can’t beat the beautiful English countryside can you! Cheers M 👍
What a day, fantastic. Always good observing behaviour. Nature at its best, brilliant. I haven’t seen a hobby for years, what a treat. Safe travels, all the best. 👍📷😎
Glad you enjoyed it Rob, bit of an off the cuff video but great just to grab the camera and head out to see what beautiful nature you can find! Yeah the hobby was a real treat, and such a stunning bird, wish I could have nailed some flight shots but there we go, just pleased to have seen it. Thanks buddy, appreciate it💪🏻👍
What a lot of fabulous bird sightings - and the deer also! Great video, footage and images. I'd love to get a good view of a hobby - maybe one day!
Thanks very much, it was great to see the Kestrels but the Icing on the cake was certainly the Hobby, such a fantastic bird to see and a total surprise. Fingers crossed you get the chance, once seen unlikely forgotten. All the best Rich 👍
Superb dosnt get much better than this does it?lovely coverage of the chicks and the nest and you are so close to them.
Thanks very much Dad, it really doesn't and the fact they allowed me in to their world was pretty special. M 👍
Cracking stuff mate! That Pied Flycatcher is a bird on my list, as are the Hobbies - decent shots of them at least. Plenty of them around my patch, I just don’t get near them - one day 🤞 It’s fantastic when you just ‘go with the flow’ (my standard approach, I don’t ‘expect’ or set myself targets) & end up having a great time of things. I’ve said it before, but I do believe you ‘earn’ a red letter day every now & then from nature & this was one of yours. Well deserved mate, a great watch. Thanks for sharing. As always, keep on keeping on bud! Best, Nick
Thanks Nick, the Pied Fly and the Hobby are such classy birds and very photogenic. The condition of their plumage is amazing, the hobby isn't always easy in flight due to their rapid nature but still a pleasure to see and photograph regardless of the outcome. Yeah, just out with your thoughts and you camera of choice and see what you can get, sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't but as you well know, when it does, it's magical! Cheers mate, I love seeing the red icon on your comment saying you've followed publicly for 4 years or more, thanks a great support. 🙏
@@RichardBirchett I never knew such a thing as a red icon existed on RUclips, but there you go now I know! 🤗 I’ve had distant hobbies hawking at height, but nothing decent as yet. As for Pied Flycatcher I don’t think there’s many/any recorded in Suffolk that I have heard of. Like you said, & we’ve both said before it’s not always about the photographs; it’s so much more than that. Time outdoors is never wasted. All the best mate, Nick
